The History of Webdesign

The history of webdesign

Technology evolves extremely quickly and people assimilate them in the same manner. Although the Internet appeared less than 30 years ago, its history and at the same time that of the web page is extremely exciting.

At this moment, the number of web pages is over 3 billion and, to read them all, we should dedicate about 20,000 years of our lives to them. Interesting, right?

Thanks to the work of all the engineers, programmers, graphic designers and those who brought innovations in the field, in 1991 the first website saw the light of day. But, history begins a little earlier…

1969 ARPANET is created
The first Internet prototype made by the U.S. Department of Defense. Advanced Research Projects Agency Network – created the first network of computers that communicated in a single network.
One computer was located in the laboratory of UCLA University and the second one in the laboratory of Stanford University. A simple LOGIN message was viewed after which the network failed. But it was the first step on the moon.

In the 70s, the TCP/IP protocol was launched and the first email was sent (1971)

Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn launched the protocol still used today in the Internet TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol), a great engineering achievement. The programmer Ray Tomlinson sent the first email message in 1971. He also thought for the first time to use the @ sign to separate the email address between the user’s name and the provider of this service.

1983 ARPANET adopts the TCP/IP protocol
This was also the moment when “networks of networks” of computers began to appear, which in fact became the modern Internet on which we still operate today.

1990 – 1992 appears – www
Tim Berners-Lee invents WWW (World Wide Web). WWW is a communication protocol between a server and a browser.

1992 – the first website was launched
The first website was launched in 1992 (thanks to CERN) and still exists today: http://info.cern.ch

1993 – ALIWEB, the first search engine, appeared
In 1993, ALIWEB (Archie Like Indexing for the WEB) appeared, considered to be the first search engine.

1994 – the first web banner
Although most of the pages were simple, in 1994 the first web banner created for AT&T appeared.

1994 – Yahoo is launched
Yahoo was launched in January 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo and starting  this year, there is a rapid development of web technologies and web pages have appeared. More than 250 colors became available to designers, web pages became attractive, with colored buttons and even 3D effects.

1995 – JavaScript
Various animated elements that stole your gaze, sparkled, shone and changed colors, appeared once with Javascript technology in 1995, which opened new horizons

1996 – Flash animations
Although Javascript is still used successfully today, in 1996 this technology was overshadowed by Flash animations. They eliminated many technical limitations existing at that time. And everything happens using only one tool: Flash. Unfortunately, this technology consumes a lot of resources and in 2007 it was abandoned by Apple on iPhone phones and since then it started a slight decline and today it is no more used.

1996 CSS was launched
CSS = Cascading Style Sheets. It came to life in 1996 under the guidance of Håkon Wium Lie who actually came up with the first proposals in 1994. It was quickly adopted by the W3C and since then it has developed impressively. CSS has opened many doors for graphic designers, giving them the opportunity to focus on elements such as structured menus, navigation tools and much more organized content. Also, CSS technology has helped a lot in increasing the loading speed of websites. CSS is today probably the most important language that a web designer must know.

1997 – and Yahoo looks like this:

1998 – the Google Beta search engine appears

2000 PayPal was launched
The largest online payment company came to life bringing a major boost to the online economy.

2003 WordPress was launched
WordPress allowed users with little technical knowledge to create their own blogs through a system of plugins and templates. WordPress has become so popular that today it is the most used content management platform in the world (CMS = Content Management System).

2004 Facebook was created
Initially it was reserved only for students and in 2006 it was opened to the general public.

2007 – web design for mobile
Since the first iPhone was launched in June 2007, the world has changed. Web design has become spectacular. The new way to scroll required a radical change in the layout of a web page, much different from the desktop.

2010 – the concept of Responsive Web Design
The Resposive Web Design concept came to life thanks to the genius of Ethan Marcotte and is still used today. The concept allows the use of the same content but positioned differently depending on the screen size. Thanks to this innovation, it was no longer necessary to build separate mobile websites.

since 2015 we have a greater variety of CMSs; “website builder” type platforms (WIX) for building websites only with “drag and drop” features;  SEO optimization (Search Engine Optimization) has reached an extremely sophisticated level; The online marketing has become increasingly complex, including mixed campaigns in Search, Social Media or simply paid advertisements.
